Upon looking at the advertisement, a couple of questions occurred to me: suppose I would take in such product, would that necessarily feed my dreams? And what would ‘feed my dreams’ mean actually? It was so ambiguous that any meaning could be associated with it. Suppose I try to give it some meaning, which was to encourage me and make my dreams come true like those men who were featured, would that make it similar to what Muscle Milk was trying to portray in the ad? And what dreams would the product make come true, only those who dream to be like those ‘rookies’ and top athletes? It seemed to me, with this ad, that Muscle Milk was trying to put some causal link between taking in their product and the successful careers of the three athletes. Would a successful career be a product of taking in a supplement like that? It does not necessarily follow, thus, this ad had committed fallacy of false cause. Like some of the more informed consumers, I always looked for some reason to believe as regards the claim of a company’s product in its advertisement. The one thing that I had noted in this advertisement was the reason to believe provided the wrong authority to back up the claim. I then asked myself, would I believe this advertisement in its claim for the benefits that Muscle Milk would offer if I were to buy some supplements? Should I not consult a dietitian or a nutritionist in order for me to know the effects of taking in such product to my body, had I wanted to reap the benefits that the product claimed? Therefore, if the claim to the benefits should prove to be true, surely, it should be the dietitians and not the athletes who were to be consulted? A family ritual to strengthen family bonds Essay As I was answering the Family rituals questionnaire, I felt good as i was somewhat compelled to reminisce the activities which I shared with my family when I was a child. It feels good to see that our family got a high score in the questionnaire. In only proves that we have been quite close as a family. I was only mesmerized as I recalled those moments when we simultaneously scan our old pictures and laugh at the way all of us looked in the past. I also enjoyed recalling the fond memories of our excursions when I was still a child. Personally, I do not want to change that kind of relationship which I had with my family in the past. I would like us to maintain this close relationship we have right now. For me, this is how families are supposed to be. Families are supposed to spend most of the time together so they can be updated with the events happening to one another. In this sense, they will always be available to succor when one among the family members is having some dilemma. In addition to that, the intimacy between them will not be lost; and instead, will only be kindled. That feeling of intimacy will make them more comfortable and more expressive with one another. The ritual that I would like to apply to my family is a unique Islamic tradition called Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr is being done some time after Ramadan. It is basically a tradition celebrating the success of the recently done Ramadan which is a whole month of blessings and joy. Moreover, Eid al-Fitr is also the extension of these blessings and joy to those who happen to be less fortunate. Every Muslim family must offer some donation of any kind to those who are in need. They do this so the needy can participate in the celebration as well. This is done before the end of the Eid so all the people can be prepared for the jubilation. When the day of the Eid comes, all of the participants will gather outdoors – in mosques – to perform a prayer that is especially for the Eid. Afterwards, the participants will begin to disperse and mingle with one another. They will meet up with their families, friends and other acquaintances to give presents and express their cordial greetings. If they have relatives who are not present and cannot go to the event, they can call them on the hoping and likewise extend their wishes. This event usually lasts for three days to allow the Muslims make the most out of the celebration. The meaning of this ritual is that it can manifest the unity and comradeship among its participants. By extending their warm wishes to other people and giving donations to those who are in need, the participants learn to take care aside from their selves and value other people as well. The act of giving donations can be symbolically interpreted as an act of offering something that sincerely comes from the self. The act is like transcending the self and its own interests in order to extend one’s hands to other people. By applying this ritual with my family, I aim that my family will have a sense of responsibility and learn how to work as a group. Moreover, I can also reinforce family planning. My family will learn that they also have responsibility over other people –their fellowmen – and that all of us must unite for a singular cause. By promoting the behavior of giving donations to the poor and mingling with the family members, the unity of a singular cause is reinforced. As we harbor in mind the need to achieve a singular purpose, we will learn how to work as a group. In the latter process, we will develop a more cohesive bond among ourselves. The part of mingling with other people can only encourage us to commune more deeply with one another and be aware of one another’s experiences. As the ritual will be repetitious, all of its objectives will be recurrently addressed. In addition to that, by mingling with the family members in the course of the ritual, we will realize the importance of family planning. In our family, there are more than ten of us who are siblings and it will surely be harder for us to greet one another while doing the ritual. Lastly, I think that the ritual need not to change as the members of the family grow older. We must only adapt with one another and our family embers – and our oscillating temperaments, tastes and yearnings. The touchstone of the ritual is that we feel the warm company of our family members as we do and enjoy doing things together. In that sense, my two goals can be achieved. We learn that we are responsible for the welfare of our family members and we learn to work collectively in making all of us grow individually as persons and the family as a whole.

When we taped our scene The Outing from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly creative ideas were always taken into contemplation. Weather it would be the surroundings of the film, the dialogue, or the way we made Jean Bauby be perceived, imagination was key in our production process. One of our film techniques was scenery. We found it best to begin our film with the lonely hospital setting. For our viewers, this made the film seem more isolated and secluded. We wanted this affect for our audience because in the actual story, Jean was sad and sheltered from his surroundings, just like you would be in a hospital when you are not able to take care of yourself. Imagery is what creates the vivid representation in our minds by playing on the senses. Dialogue, also know as script, was very important when making our film. Dialogue prevents accidents, sets goals, and scripts help communication and streamline revision. With the use of this filming concept, our group easily accomplished the task of filming all our scenes in an organized fashion with no problems. Our group never came across the struggle of knowing what we were going to film before we actually filmed it. Perception was furthermore a key ingredient when constructing our scene. We created the clip from our understanding of the authors writing. My group had to go though the process of taking the actual text, forming an image in our minds, and then be able to take all of our different creative ideas and make it into a film. This was challenging but then again, through the use of a storyboard, this process became straightforward. With the thorough development of our motion picture, many various film techniques helped us with the theme and overall conception of our clip. In the end, our group easily took written concepts and formed them into an image in which we then filmed. And on the other hand has seen marked decline as a result of the global financial crisis which began in 2007. The crisis has caused significant decline to the real estate development and activities of the UAE economy prior to which the Emirates enjoyed an unprecedented real estate growth which was above any other in the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC region) (Kamco Research, 2010). In nominal term, research shows that the industry recorded a CAGR of 20% from the early 2000s to 2007 and as of 2007 the market showed a strong growth rate of over 21% with real estate constituting about 8% of the country’s total GDP estimated at over (15 billion USD) (Whatley, 2011). Given the country’s attractive position as a global tourist and investment destination, infrastructural growth and development of tourist sites and hotels as well as other entertainment and hospitability sectors has buoyed the real estate growth of the country. Indeed prior to the financial crisis, demands for properties were said to have significantly outweighed supply in both private and commercial real estate markets (Kuwait Finance House, 2011). Indeed, according to the Kuwait Finance House (2011), â€Å"there is still a shortage of units in the residential and commercial segments due to the unprecedented economic boom, high employment growth, foreign companies setting up base in the country, and huge inflow of expatriates†. The Kuwait Finance House further notes that the main factors underpinning the Emirates rapid real estate market growth are: Solid macroeconomic foundation, Public expenditure and huge fiscal surplus, Dollar-dirham peg and the record high inflati on rates given that stubbornly high rates of inflation in the country rationalises investment decisions into the real estate market since property is used as a hedge against inflation. It has been noted indeed that inflation has overtaken official lending rates in the Emirates thus it is cheaper for people to borrow than to keep money in deposit accounts, therefore real estate investment is considered as a realistic way of hedging against inflation (Albayan, 2009). In addition to the above stated factors, the Kuwait Finance House also suggests that part of the drivers of the Emirates real estate market are population growth, abundant liquidity and finally the availability of Islamic banking. The irony of the real estate market growth of the economy is that while most of the factors which gave rise its emergence has helped to hedge against the global financial crisis at the very start of the crisis, many of the factors also contributed to its decline. The financial crisis of 2007 did not start to unfold on the Emirates economy until the third quarter of 2008 but when its impacts downed on the economy, it put to test a growth that has been unprecedented in any region in the Middle East for the past 10 years (Albayan, 2009). According to Kamco Research (2011) at the heat of the financial crisis in 2009, the government asked the Dubai World which is its official real estate investment agency to stop all investment activities until March 2010 as a r esult of what it described as ‘terrible impact of the crises until when its impact might have subsided. Since 2009, the Dubai World has laid off over 10,500 construction staff with Dubai World’s debt standing at over $59 billion. As of 2009, the emirates debt was put at $80 billion. While at first quarter of 2009, the Abu Dhabi investment agency offered to help Dubai amidst its real estate market collapse, Abu Dhabi also felt the impact of the crisis as a result of the global crisis. As of the first quarter of 2009, the real estate market plunged by almost 70% of the pre-crisis value and of the 980 ongoing real estate projects in Dubai, only 47 were completed in 2009 with about 500  registered with the Real Estate Regulatory Agency (Rera) cancelled. Since most investment into the emirate’s real estate market were from investors abroad with over 70% investment being FDI, the crisis which started from the United States and Europe unleashed   its impact on the emirates as investors could not get funds from their western financiers and the rate of financial liquidity which initially increased the crisis reduced in the economy. Albayan (2009) also notes that most of the factors which led to the demands of real estate in the emirates were stunted. For instance he notes that the demand for tourism declined significantly thus affecting hotels rate of occupancy. This also led to the impact of the crisis felt in ongoing developments. While several accounts have been put forward to rationalise the real estate market decline in relation to the financial crisis, knowledge about the country’s real market decline amidst the crisis is still skewed. Besides, as the market is still struggling to come back to the pre-crisis period, there are concerns that if the real causes to the decline are not identified, there will be difficulty in moving forward and achieving the needed growth. In view of this background, the proposed dissertation will critically explore the impact of the financial crisis on the real estate market. The dissertation is concerned with identifying and examining the main causal factors responsible for transmitting the impact of the crisis on the real estate market and the varying strategies that have been employed to mitigate future impacts. The following are the specific aims and objectives of the dissertation. Research Objectives: Investigate the similarities or differences between UAE real estate markets, and those in the UK. Ascertain the reasons why the global financial crisis could have had an impact on the UAE real estate, especially given differences in banking principles. Ascertain the role of Islamic banking in mitigating the impact of the financial crises. Investigate the direct and indirect impacts that the financial crisis had on the UAE real estate market, and its subsequent impact on the UAE economy. 1.3 Research Question How has the financial crisis impacted upon the UAE real estate market? 2.0 Literature Review   The 2007 global economic and financial Crisis which started from the US subprime mortgage crisis has affected virtually all the countries around the world given the interconnectedness of the global economy. The crisis which led to the collapse of several well known institutions such as Lehman Brothers also led to the bailout of financial institutions, and the near collapse of many governments as well as downturns in stocks markets around the world (Bob, 2012). As a result of the crisis, there have been credit default problems, negative interest rate movements, inflation rate fluctuation and several distortions in the financial agreement of many financial obligations and agreements. As the credit crisis led to the collapse of financial institutions, it became problematic for investors to expend more on their business commitments and financial obligations as borrowing became squeezed as the liquidity ratios of many banks almost diminished (TIME Magazine  Friday, April 10, 2009). While the crisis has unleashed its impact on every economy and the Emirate’s economy in particular on one hand through its heavy financial implication, it has on the other hand had huge impact on other Emirate’s industries. As noted by Kamco Research (2011), the financial crisis started to affect the UAE through the decline of tourists and tourism activities which further led to decreased demand for housing and real estate as well as hospitality and h otels in particular. Kamco Research notes that since investors income started to nosedive as a result of low hotel occupancy and diminishing tourism activities which once fuelled the real estate market, this led to falling profits and investors started to abort new projects. As noted by Wam (2010), when the crisis started in UAE in late 2008, over 150 real estate investment projects were called off by investors who had started to fall into trouble with their financial institutions regarding their financial agreements. The Citibank notes that: â€Å"real estate projects worth 170 billion USD have been cancelled since the financial crisis explosion with rents seeing a decline of over four fifths since 2008. Also, Al Futtaim a Real Estate group in Dubai during the financial crisis stopped work on the Dubai Festival City which was billed to cost almost 3 billion USD. Similarly, major projects were stalled such as hotel and other developments were stalled. For instance, Four Seasons Ho tel and the Al Badia Business Centre which are major real estate development projects were stopped. According to the Executive Magazine, the company has taken this step in order to benefit from a further fall in construction costs due to the financial crisis, which would enable it to reduce its expenses. At the same time, the UAE government which has enjoyed almost a decade of surplus fiscal regime had started to feel the impact of the crisis as the government debt has quickly risen to over $30 billion as of early 2008. The government’s bad fiscal position led it to order the Dubai Corporation to stop all real estate market activities while the heat of the crisis subsides. While the Kuwait Finance House had in 2008 earlier predicted that the UAE will not feel the global credit squeeze due to private consumption growth that is likely to remain strong as well as the population growth of expatriates in the country who boosted consumer confidence. The financial crisis at its peak contrarily affected the growth of private consumption in a lot of ways. According to Mintel Research (2010), â€Å"since private institutions were unable to obtain credits from banks to sustain different projects and demands for almost entirely all services declined, private consumption growth was affect ed to much that it took the UAE back to a pre-20 year period when it could the country could not be found on the face of the earth†. Following the crisis, the government has taken several steps to mitigate the impact of the crisis (Global Property Guide, 2011). The central bank has for instance begun to overhaul the banking system by raising bank’s liquidity ratio in order to encourage banks to give credit while the capital base has also increased (Hatoum, 2012). As a result of the steps taken by the central bank and other government agencies, the UAE reality market has began to emerge out of the crisis. Dubai’s residential real estate market is finally recovering after hitting bottom, while neighbouring Abu Dhabi continues to struggle. A property index published by Zawya Dow Jones (2012) shows that the home prices in Dubai saw a rise of almost 7.6 percent for the year at the start of 2012, but prices in Abu Dhabi dropped 4.1% in the same time period. 3.0 Methodology The methodology is an important element of the research process which shows the design elements of the research particularly with regard to data collection and the adopted techniques as well as their justification. Accordingly, this section of the proposal sets out the proposed methodology of the dissertation. The current literature shows the existence of two approaches to research: namely the deductive and inductive methods (Saunders et al, 2003). While the deductive approach is leaned towards a scientific evaluation or understanding of data as well as the relationship between variables, the inductive approach owes much to gaining an understanding of the meanings humans attach to events as well as the research context (Saunders et al, 2003). The merits of both approaches have been considered useful for the proposed dissertation; hence both the deductive and inductive research will be employed. This includes: The use of statistical methods in testing samples The uses a highly structured methodology in order to enhance reproducibility of the results An exploration of relationships between complex variables Concerning the strategy suitable for the dissertation, the exploratory research methods have been considered useful given that it is the one used explore phenomena that are yet to be studied or to further explore areas that have received few investigations as is the proposed dissertation. As noted by Silverman (1993), exploratory research seeks to understand a particular phenomenon as well as to gain new insights and perspectives on the phenomenon under investigation. Saunders et al (2003) note an advantage of exploratory research as being its flexibility and adaptability permitting the researcher to easily take on any direction that the data may dictate in the course of gathering the data. 1. Introduction I believe that the purpose of my media audit was to take our initial idea of what we believed our media usage was and to measure and compare it to our actual quantified results. I believe this was excellent exercise to carry out in order to observe how much Media affects our everyday lives. Our society in America bases a large part of our adolescent learning process on what we acquire from outside sources. Therefore, to analyze, where the basis of many of adolescents’ perspectives derive from, was exceptionally insightful. Adolescents are bombarded daily by youth issues, such as: staying adhered to their morals, developing their character, self-image, self-respect, fitting in, feeling love, and avoiding brutality. With sixteen hours equaling one day, I summarized the total minutes for the week at approximately 6,720 minutes. My total minutes not exposed to media were about 1,407 minutes, and my total exposure to mass media was approximately 5,1313 minutes. Individual categories concluded as follows: Audio estimated at 475 minutes, Film- 100 minutes, Internet- 1,778 min, Television- 0 minutes, Mobile Devices- 2,185 minutes, and Print Media approximated 775 minutes. The reason why Pandora is so successful in mass media is because people get to listen to their type of music without having to tell the radio WHAT to play. Coinciding with this behavior and influence, I also became extremely self-conscious and began to hate my self-image, this coming from someone, who has never had severe issues about my image. I also judged every person’s appearance effortlessly, gossiped, and my language was atrocious. Only until the middle of my 22nd year, did I realize that I was not content, nor satisfied with my lifestyle. I decided to cut out television, bad influences, and COSMO. I didn’t think I would be able to handle it, however, to my surprise, it taught me how to live life, the way it was intended, with freedom. Releasing myself from the burden of mass media was one of the most liberating decisions I’ve ever made. I decided to return back to my Jewish roots, which I ignored during that rebellious era, and become deeper aquatinted with my faith, additionally instead of useless reality shows, I dove deep into the profound knowledge of books. It is amazing to witness your character development transform when it relies on a stable foundation. â€Å"I find television very educating. Observations The first major observation I noticed in relation to my media data was the fact that my two most dominant categories increased on the weekend. This is most likely because my workweek is so hectic, that by the time I’m approaching the weekend, all my energy is geared towards relaxation. These emotions are then replaced with the action of increasing my phone/ casual conversation time. I also tend to research all those topics online, that I might have put off during the week, in order to complete my work on time. Another observation that was extremely consistent included listening to Pandora (Internet radio) whenever I worked on my art. In contrast, I would listen to my IPOD whenever I wanted to get schoolwork accomplished. On Pandora, my typical station I listen to when creating my art pieces, is always geared towards inspirational or spiritual genre. It is the only music I find, to empower me with such motivation, in order to finish my pieces with ease and in a timely manner. I also tend to listen to classical music on my IPOD, when trying to complete a class work assignment. I read an article one time that did a study on the brain and how it affects positive stimulation. The article was extremely informative and I have done it ever since. Another observation I realized, I tried to double task consistently while listening to some form of media and trying to complete concrete tasks. I believe this behavior has done more to hinder my personal effectiveness, rather than help it. It was helpful to be informed of this destructive behavior, after realizing the concrete facts. My double tasking always eventually lead to unfinished tasks, and then when I eventually became overwhelmed, I grabbed my IPOD and pulled out the classical music. It was interesting to become aware of these behaviors; I never knew I was such a creature of habit. Also, reflecting on all the realizations mentioned above, I believe that some of these destructive behaviors could be prevented, with a decrease in use of my media items, which in turn, would increase my focus. 4.Estimates Vs. Actual My Estimates were all underestimated compared to my actual data for my media usage. Like I previously stated, I didn’t realize I used my phone so much, I usually get confronted by my friends for â€Å"forgetting† to text them back, or not answering. Sometimes I feel like life would be much easier without our mobile devices. The only truly useful purpose is to locate and converse with friends that are long distance, however as far as â€Å"Smartphone,† I feel the epidemic needs to be cured. The other estimate that highly underestimated was my Internet use. I believe when I was filling those questions out, I didn’t necessarily take into account that EVERY time I click the APP button, that is using an internet resource. I guess this is a perfect example of how abundantly society has desensitized, since the Windows 98’ debut. I also believe the reason I anticipated my â€Å"No Media use† to be my highest value in how I disperse my time, is due to my deliberation to rebel against any more media influences. I refuse to passively let society manipulate my thoughts, with the slightest opposition. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article about students and time management. This article served as a source of great insight because time management is one of my biggest character flaws. However, this is not due to the fact that I am not eager to do well on an assignment, I love learning, this type of procrastination is detrimental because it is attached to another flaw, perfectionism. Typically I procrastinate because I’m afraid the product of my hard work would not be â€Å"perfect.† I was raised with a very high academic work ethic, therefore, grades used to be where I found my id entity. This continually puts way too much stress on my life, and as I mature not just as a student, but also as a responsible adult, I’m drastically striving to improve this destructive outlook. What if I believe imperfection is beautiful? These realizations in this past year of my life have shaped my thoughts to maturity and to become more concerned with what comes from each individuals heart. If you ask me, I believe actions speak louder than words, and gossip, slander, lying, and boasting echo across the nations. I do my best to separate myself from any person or organization that is trying to convince I HAVE to look like a prototype and think like a r obot. All in all, I fell my media audit was extremely insightful, and helped me become aware of how I truly engulf my time. It showed me where I have plenty of room to improve and how far I’ve come since the Cosmo days. African American Gay Rights Essay

I cannot begin to argue about African American/Hispanic LGBT, living in New York City and their civil rights without remembering the public outcry against black civil rights. Although the focus of this paper is on African American/Hispanic LGBT living in New York City and Their Rights to Marriage I have decided to start my paper of by discussing the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. The civil rights movement of the 1960’s and the continuing struggle against race-based discrimination were rooted in the struggle against slavery. As early as the eighteen hundreds the United States legislative had laws known as segregation laws that limited certain freedom to them. They had to live in separate neighborhood, attend separate schools, drive in the back of public buses verses in the front where Whites were; African American would not dare go against these laws back then because if and when they did, they were unjustly imprisoned, beaten lynched and more for just trying to exercise human rights. In the 1960s African Americans led a fight to remove the legally codified vestiges of slavery from our constitution and from state and local laws. Most repulsive among these, were Jim Crow laws that required racial segregation; African Americans had to endure all these things until The Civil Rights Movement. The modern concept of civil rights was pioneered by African Americans in their long struggle to become full citizens of the United States. From the Civil Rights Movement to the Stonewall Riots of 1969 to May 17, 2004, the LGBTQ movement has made some tremendous gains into mainstream society, a reality that has not been afforded to African Americans. The African American Civil Rights Movement gave birth to many other civil rights movements in the 1960s. African Americans not only made new law, their success gave new hope. Among the many efforts sparked by the African American Civil Rights Movements were the efforts to end discrimination against women, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans, people with disabilities and lesbians and gays. Some African American still has one more river to cross because now African American LGBT are fighting a new civil war, the fight for same sex marriage; the right to be legally married. Currently, marriage has two distinct components: civil marriage and the religious ritual of marriage. Mixed-gender couples can have a civil marriage without the religious ceremony/ritual. Couples can have a religious ceremony/ritual, without a civil marriage. Some couples can choose both. However, to receive the legal protections of marriage, a couple must have a civil marriage, which is the only marriage that can be addressed by courts or legislatures. The LBGT believe that the rights and legal protections of civil marriage that are given to mixed-gender couples and families should also be extended to couples and families who are headed by same-gender couples. These include the rights of survivorship, inheritance, insurance, joint income tax filing, and a myriad of rights that many mixed-gender couples take for granted. For African American LGBT, state regulation has been particularly harsh. State sodomy law has had a way of preventing LGBT from acquiring some of the rights they are entitle to. Today, fewer than half the state has sodomy laws. LGBT recognizes New York City for being the birth place for many modern gay movements; however, New York has not yet passed any law giving LGBT legal protection and political support, (right to marriage being on of them). New York State gay rights bill, first introduced in 1971, still has not become law. While other states, like Vermont has established civil unions for LGBT, New York has not. Andy Humm writes that the biggest gay-related debate throughout the country right now is over government sanction of same-sex elationships. Vermont has gone the furthest, establishing â€Å"civil unions† for gay couples that confer almost all of the rights to which a married man and woman are entitled, though stopping short of full legal marriage. New Yorkers may travel to Vermont for the civil ceremony as of July 1, but there is some question as to what legal weight it will carry back home. The federal government enacted the â€Å"Defense of Marriage Act† (DOMA) in 1996 when it looked as if Hawaii might give same-sex couples marriage licenses. It barred federal recognition of legal same-sex marriages performed in any state and gave the other states the right not to honor such a contract. Thirty-two states have passed laws barring recognition of same-sex marriages performed in other states, even though no state or nation allows gay couples to obtain a marriage license. (Holland will likely be the first in 2001. ) A New York version of the Defense of Marriage Act is pending in Albany, but has not had a vote in either chamber. I had been employed as Assistant Chief Information Officer multinational company. Still, decision making was a tremendously slow process as it lacked clarity as to who had the decision making authority.A group would discuss the issue because one key person was not present (being double booked in another meeting) hence, the decisions were not finalized. Line of meetings being unresolved was common. Although I was brought into a company as a change agent tasked to bring strategic change to the business unit, I realized that it was not truly the case. Interest in change was driven by the instantaneous short term demands of particular clients, executives. At this point I managed to gather a team responsible for coordinating technology linked projects.After extensive talks with my head, the team that reported to me was handed over to someone else, and I was to report to this new head as an independent contributor. This change was an extremely difficult period for me, yet important in shaping my views of leadership. This was a period where deep reflection on my sense of identity, my values, and sense of personal integrity was brought out. I interpreted this change as the system. I will speak more about what I learnt of the change in a later section. A new major acquisition had just been signed and the focus had shifted from long-term st rategy to short term integration.After six months in the position, I moved out of the business unit to work with a larger parent company. My favorite definition of leadership relics Sun Tzu in the Art of War: â€Å"The way [of leadership] means inducing the people to have the same aim as the leadership, so that they will share death and share life, without fear of danger† (Sun Tzu, 2005, p. 43). The definition recognizes the collaborative dynamic that leader and follower share– both share the benefits and risks in its pursuit. Moreover, Senge’s work presented me to systems thinking and understanding the unified wholeness of organizations.This view was reinforced by my study of Neurolinguistic Programming and Neuro-Semantics, understanding human communications and the way in which we learn to construct our mental maps of the area. I saw conscious decisions to be freeing and challenging at the same time. This commitment was a challenging as I began to explore the process of leadership outside the hierarchical power structure that could command action by positional authority. Now as an independent contributor I found myself able to lead freely in a variety of ways, highlighting the need of influence in the contexts that I was called for.I mentally stepped back from the situation and took a look at the business, it’s internal and external stakeholders. I would foresee the recede and flow of people as they enthused about their work, the processes of numerous departments that enabled this organism to be effective. I also realized that minor issues evolved into major problems. I witnessed that an aspect of leadership is to distinguish this ebb and drift of the organization and identify the systemic pain points – soon enough so that adequate time is available to resolve the pain points.Often key issues remain intact solely because the situations have not reached the pain point to seize adequate attention. Partly it appeared to be an issue of prioritization; partly a problem of prevailing beliefs within the culture that impacts what employees attend to. A fundamental belief I have about leadership is that the leader is one who recognizes a potential future and asserts in motion actions that move those involved. Disequilibrium Disequilibrium is a vital situation in the dynamics of an organization, point at which the possibility for self-excelling construction of novel approaches to specific challenges to occur.The pressures associated with disequilibrium is the point when pain thresholds reach a important point that gives an organization to be receptive to emerging possibilities. Although, there are differences in the role that leadership plays in such situations. I was one of the senior employees called to speak to the other employees after the declaration that the company was to be closed. After weeks of discussions of the positive doles of the merger, one hundred and fifty people were told of losing their jobs (a third of them, the very day! I bid everyone to come together, acknowledged that there had been a death in the family and we knew where we all stood. Also, I was able to distribute a booklet to each employee on tackling with consequences of a merger. I had prepared these booklets without awareness of what the outcome of the merger would be. After discussions with the employees post meeting, I got validation for the value of the confab in bringing about a collective sense of acceptance to the veracity we faced. They also agreed that the booklet carried a tangible sense of being cared for in the development.There is a paradoxical dynamic to disequilibrium states. A disequilibrium state can although have the inverse effect occasioning in a resistance to transformation. In my understanding, the test of leadership is the capacity to anticipate and influence change afore the state of disequilibrium becomes serious. My sense of obscurity assisted as a motivator to securing the â€Å"me rger transition† booklets prior to the settlement of the merger (It was intuited that the result may not be as favorable as had formerly been voiced by management).As organizations operate as complex adaptive systems, the dynamics leading to disequilibrium usually exist as symptoms which could be observed and responded before the problem becomes serious. In this context, the process of (proactive) leadership shows self-regulating effect in the organization by permitting the process of self-transcending structure. Leadership as a Process Concluded by my experiences I see leadership as an ongoing process that befalls in human organizations through the interplay of formal and informal relationships. Leadership as a process is personified by actors who respond to a situation.Therefore, the manager should be able to carry more complex thinking to issues that a subordinate may encounter, and bring value to understanding the work. Similarly, the subordinate is responsible for sharing visions about the work with his/her manager who can pass on the developments and insights further up the hierarchy. Whatever skills I may have in endorsing leadership may be totaled by ineffective structure in the system. In fact, I point the lack of an obligatory organizational structure as one if not the major inhibitions to organizational ineffectiveness within my work environment.Leadership as a State of Mind To finish, I have come to see leadership as a state of mind. This lures originally from the work of Robert Quinn (2004), which recommends that there are certain states that act as attractors for the performer to take action that can be viewed as leadership in a particular setting. The Fundamental State of Leadership (FSL) generates the internal context that motivates the performer to respond and is replicated in interrelated attitudes, which Quinn gaps with opposing attitudes reflecting the â€Å"normal state. The FSL serves two functions: mainly by creating an attractor that boosts active behavior that aids the greater betterment of the organization. Second it gives way for the performer to be more aware of his/her perceptions and arrays of behavior. In the year of my tenure with my employer, I was aware of the requirement for a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to be able to serve the organization and needs of its customers efficiently. My suggestions met substantial confrontation with management as an earlier attempt to put in a CRM system had been unsuccessful.I was determined in expressing this requisite – to the point that my manager expressed that if I brought the matter up again I would be left out from management meetings. And then came the day when he wanted a current clients list and found out that our current systems could not yield an accurate list. All of a sudden putting in a new system became a primacy- months after the actual recommendation. In an akin manner, as I transitioned to a role in the parent company, I p iloted a research, which headed me to an awareness of the important of e-business and germaneness for the growth of the company.I became a fervent advocate of e-business and presented several proposals to senior executives. But, my recommendations were not incorporated, mainly because senior executives did not trust that it was a feasible tool within the industry. Atypically, a few months later there is renewed concern in expanding e-business for the company. These situations reinforced for me a primary norm that the process of leadership is introduced as an actor who recognizes a specific need and makes an effort to take action, even in times of obstacles.This shows an alignment with the core defiance described in the FSL. I end with a case study where I intentionally experienced the FSL in exercising leadership. I took part in a voluntary cross-functional team looking to enhance employee work experience. With gas prices on the hike, there was a strong curiosity in developing a str ategy for telecommuting. Numerous solutions were suggested and were instantly shot down by the representative from IT as either being too expensive, too time consuming for the IT staffs, or too risky from a company’s security.I do not terminate the importance and connotation of formal leadership structures, rather I am noting that leadership fundamentally functions as an internal response to attractors that allow self-transcending construction as an answer to a perceived reality. Inside the organizations, the interplay of actors captivating action to lead in formal or informal capabilities is dynamic and complex and outside the scope of this discussion. Note that this portrayal is not intended to reflect deleteriously on the behavior of the IT representative.As an entity caught in the webs of loftier meaning – synchronization of the myriad of service appeals from multiple functional departments with partial resources in staff and dollars can impart a mindset that by a specific technology that had not been discussed. Despite obvious resistance from IT to propose a solution, I decide on doing my own research and found that a technology that had been conversed seemed to offer a sensible compromise on low cost, minimal IT backing, and strong enterprise security. I went back to the board with a bid to pursue this option.This was not a job that was part of my normal work assignment, and also I could have drop the idea. Yet the internal states that fixated on serving the greater good, and sighting the opportunity that this solution could deliver served as an attractor to endure through the resistance and eventually lead to a successful outcome. Had I opted to stay within my comfort zone, the new process and organizational dynamics would not have been developed. I’ve gratified on a number of aspects of the leadership process, which I have garnered through my work experience.In summary, I have emanated to see leadership as a dynamic process that en sues in human organizations as actors identify emerging possibilities and elect to take action. The inclination to do so is sturdily related to the actor’s internal states, and engagement of the Fundamental State of Leadership. Lastly, the efficiency of the actor may be wedged by the actor’s sphere of influence and by the actors’ formal or informal eminence and authority to act, and organizational willingness to embrace the transformation.
